Depois que os Coelhos se separaram em Petrolina(PE), um ano após a morrte do senador Nilo Coelho, as eleições municipais ficaram marcadas por disputas acirradas entre os membros da própria família. Para quem não lembra, nas eleições de 96, o então prefeito Fernando Bezerra Coelho fez de tudo para eleger seu sucessor, Diniz Cavalcanti, na tentattiva de de derrotar o primo, Guilherme Coelho, apoiado pelo pai, deputado Osvaldo Coelho.
Nos comícios, Fernando Bezerra atacava Guilherme Coelho violentamente . Certa vez, ao discursar, começou a perguntar pelo ex-prefeito, em tom irônico: -Quem é esse , que não fez o calçamento da Vila Papelão?- Indagava para depois fazer uma pausa , como se esperasse a resposta. -Quem é esse, que não fez a adutora para trazer mais água para o municipio?Quem é esse… Continuava a perguntar.
A ladainha só foi interrompida pelo grito de um bêbado impaciente : -É o teu primo. Porra!
Essa conversa de paz entre a família sempre foi balela! Com a proximidade das eleições de novembro de 1986, houve desentendimentos que dividiram a família Coelho entre os que apoiaram o Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) e os que apoiaram o Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL). Filiado a esta última legenda, Osvaldo Coelho elegeu-se deputado federal constituinte.
Foi aí que começou a desavença dentro da família. Osvaldo, homem sério e de palavra firme, não aceitou o posicionamento de Fernando Bezerra e houve separação, de sobrinhos, irmãos, noras e genros. uma verdadeira celeuma. Osvaldo Coelho morreu, mas deixou claro que nunca votaria em Fernando Bezerra Coelho.
Nas duas últimas eleições, Guilherme Coelho, por força de acordo, resolveu levantar a bandeira branca.Deu até onde deu. Neste ano, Guilherme Coelho rompe mais uma vez com Fernando Bezerra , segue seu caminho e não apoiará Miguel Coelho, candidato ao governo de Pernambuco. Ele vai apoiar Raquel Lyra que é do seu partido, PSDB, e vai buscar seu lugar ao Sol, tentando uma vaga para deputado federal. Acabou a paz!
