Na sexta-feira passada (5), ela escreveu que seguia como secretária porque não se permitiria deixar trabalhos incompletos e citou uma possível liberação de recursos do Fundo do Setor do Audiovisual. A atriz chegou a ficar cerca de 3 meses a frente da Secretaria Nacional de Cultura
Regina Duarte é exonerada da Secretaria de Cultura do governo federal 20 dias após anunciar a saída do cargo.
A exoneração foi publicada nesta quarta-feira (10) no Diário Oficial da União como sendo a pedido da atriz. A demissão foi assinada pelo presidente Jair Bolsonaro e pelo ministro do Turismo, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, a quem a Secretaria de Cultura está subordinada.

Quando anunciou que deixaria o cargo, há 20 dias, Regina Duarte postou um vídeo com o presidente Bolsonaro dizendo que assumiria a Cinemateca brasileira, em São Paulo, para ficar mais próxima da família. A cinemateca é responsável pela preservação e divulgação do Cinema Nacional. Porém, ela ainda não foi nomeada para o cargo.
