Tudo começou por causa dos times de futebol do município ( Petrolina Clube e o 1º de Maio), que por causa da falta de documentos, as equipes, estão fora da Série A2 do Campeonato Pernambucano. Para o vereador Ronaldo Silva, a secretaria municipal de Cultura, Turismo e Esporte, é a culpada de não ter liberado o estádio da cidade por falta de interesse. Ainda segundo o vereador, a secretária Maria Elena, tem que dar explicações para o público petrolinense, a respeito do assunto. O futebol petrolinense completará cem anos de história, e ainda assim, sofre e, sofre muito com o desprezo por parte do poder público da cidade.
