As moscas tendem a aparecer com mais frequência em determinadas épocas do ano. Isso ocorre porque, de acordo com especialistas, esses insetos se reproduzem mais facilmente em ambientes propícios, que facilitam a decomposição do material onde se desenvolvem. A nutricionista Mariana Cortes explica que, além disso, a disponibilidade de alimentos para as moscas aumenta quando há mais restos de comida e matéria orgânica para se alimentarem.
As moscas podem representar perigos para a saúde humana, pois elas carregam diversas bactérias, fungos e vírus em seus corpos. Esses microrganismos são adquiridos quando as moscas se alimentam de material em decomposição, como excrementos. Ao pousarem em alimentos, elas acabam deixando pequenas quantidades desses compostos indesejados, o que pode contaminar o que comemos. Isso acontece porque as moscas têm um processo de alimentação especial: elas vomitam na comida para começar a digeri-la. As enzimas presentes em sua saliva ajudam a decompor parcialmente o alimento, facilitando a digestão.
